Easy Ways to Give Elders Their Independence

More elders are hoping to live out their days in the comfort and familiarity of their home instead of being transferred to assisted living. Wanting this independence is an important part to maintaining it. Fortunately, there are many ways that families can keep their elders safe and healthy while living in their homes. Here are five ways to create a nurturing place for your loved one to thrive in.
1. Elder-Proof the Home.
Do a thorough walk through of the home and look for potential dangers. Consider ways to make the home safer and more comfortable such as by installing a tub seat and handlebar in the shower, installing sturdy railings on both sides of the stairwell and placing non-slip mats in the bathroom and kitchen.
2. Set up a Home Alert System
Since your elder will be spending a lot of time alone, consider setting up a home alert system. Not only do these systems protect against burglary and theft, but also they can alert the local authorities if there is a fire, flood or carbon monoxide detected in the home. They also provide peace of mind for everyone.
3. Purchase a Medical Alert System
To provide personalized medical health care to an elder, a medical alert system is the perfect option. The alert pendant can be worn on a bracelet, or a push button can be installed somewhere in the home. A simple press of the button will alert a response center that will assess the situation and provide help. Medical alert systems work commonly with elders who fall, suffer from chronic conditions or need a helping hand.
4. Leverage Technology
Your elder will most likely need help with this, but leverage the technological tools that are available. Order prescriptions online and have them sent to the home, set up a Skype account to chat with your loved one face-to-face and order groceries online. These tools will allow your loved one to be independent, and you can access the accounts when needed.
5. Consider In-Home Help
An in-home care agency can come to the home and help with light household tasks and provide companionship for your loved one. Many times this type of help is what enables elders to continue living in their homes, especially if family is not nearby. Don’t forget to reach out to local park districts and senior centers to keep your loved one active in age-appropriate activities.
Maintaining independence is one of the best ways for seniors to maintain a positive outlook on life, and should be held to high importance.  By integrating the latest technologies into a home, most elders can enjoy home living well into their later years.
